That was the best monologue in the movie. Because he realized he was already dead. He was supposed to die his entire life. We pity those kids from poor districts. But have we ever stopped to think of the careers? They were trained to do this. Knowing they would most likely die. What kind of parents use their kids as a business? Trained to make them rich, or die. The children from 12 were poor and starving and weak. But most of them had their parents. Loving parents who would die to get some food to bring home for them. Cato and the rest of the careers lived under a fake mask of glory. And he realized it right before he died. “Is that what you wanted?” He screamed to the cameras. Was he blaming the Capitol? Or maybe, just maybe, was there a heartless mother back home, realizing she killed her child from the day he was born?
I’m so glad they added this monologue to the movie. The effect it had on the plot line. It wasn’t just Katniss and Peeta and Gale who hated the Capital for the things they were putting them through. The Careers even saw the err of it all. They realized they were dying for absolutely nothing, for someone else’s entertainment. It kind of foreshadowed the uprisings, I think.
wow this pisses me off. Yeah, it’s sad that the Careers die. They’re children, they’re brainwashed to be killers. It’s very sad. But I cannot fathom an attitude that would say Katniss or the other starving kids in district 12 some how had it better than the Careers. Jesus god what? Besides, did Katniss have loving affectionate parents? No. She had a dead father and an absent mother. You know what starvation and extreme poverty does to people? It makes it very very hard to be a loving parent. That was sort of the whole point of Katniss inability to be likable wasn’t it? She was too busy surviving. So yeah, fuck this. Be sad for the careers, I was, but in what universe would their situation be worse?
also lol “heartless mother.” You mean like Peeta’s? Where in canon she tells him “maybe 12 will have a winner”?
feelings about fiction, but also about real life because honestly this reads to me like poor privileged fee fees and how we never stop to think about how hard it must be for rich people too.
ugh.
